United Aluminium's CNC Router: Watch It Go!
See UA's Pacer 3020K CNC router in action. The operator opens a CAD file on the PC, creates a cutting path, and sends the job to the machine. Watch as the router creates a counter top component from acrylic sheet in minutes.
United Aluminium's CNC Router: preparation of CAD data
United Aluminium's Pacer 3020K CNC router can read geometric data direct from CAD files to create component cutting paths. Follow these pointers for successful data formatting:
- DWG (up to version R2007) is the preferred file format, but DXF is OK too.
- Include geometry for only 1 component per CAD file.
- The file must contain geometry only: lines & arcs. No borders, no text, no dimensions, no images.
- Ensure the lines & arcs form a continuous closed loop.
- Ensure there is only 1 layer of geometry; be careful not to overlay multiple instances of lines & arcs.
- Try to place your geometry on or close to the origin (0,0).
- Because there will be no text in the body of the document to indicate revision status, it's a good idea to include a revision note in the file name e.g.: "UA1234 CNC Rev A".
- If in doubt, please consult the Design Team for more advice.

Unibox at The Exhibiting Show 2008
United Aluminium has raided nature's store cupboard for its latest evolution of its Unibox exhibition system. This year a 4 metre-high aluminium tree dominated the Unibox stand at The Exhibiting Show. Made entirely from stock components, its intention is to highlight the possibilities of recycling in the exhibition industry.
As well as a symbol of United Aluminium's eco conciousness, the tree, (an evergreen in case you were wondering) also launched a new range. Unibox Infinity joins our exhibition, retail and graphic displays system offerings and showcases the possibilities for designers to discover ever more creative ways in which to use the Unibox system in their projects.
This is an industry which generates more than 60,000 tonnes of waste a year, at a cost of 40 million pound,* but as director Nick Wraith points out: "As individuals we are all aware of the positive impact of environmentally-friendly good practice. Now, by highlighting and encouraging the utilisation of the recyclable properties of the Unibox aluminium system, we will hopefully be making a genuine contribution to our industry's sustainability responsibilities."
Unibox develops Celtic Connection
When Celtica, a brand new retail development in, Caernarfon, was in search of a bespoke retail interior the company immediately turned to Unibox, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of retail display solutions.
Manchester based Unibox were initially approached by Peter Gee, Head of Management Team at Celtica to supply a selection of simple retail displays for the new development, however upon seeing what Unibox had to offer the project quickly escalated.
Situated in the beautiful harbour development of Victoria Dock, Caernarfon, Celtica is a concept retail development bringing together the finest of Welsh and Celtic goods, locally produced gifts, food and home ware.
Celtica retails an extensive range of fine Jewellery including sought after Welsh Gold, healthy food stuffs from local producers, a fantastic art gallery as well as goods from Ireland, Scotland and Landernau.
Working with retail interior designer Greg Hills, Unibox created a bespoke range of display systems to fill the 1500m2 store, which were not only visually pleasing but also offered environmental benefits. The Unibox team ensured that upgraded led lighting was installed throughout, a system that offers a 60% energy reduction when compared to halogen lighting.
Peter Gee, continued, ‘During the design right through to installation, the Unibox team worked very closely with us to ensure that we were getting the very best service and our brief was being met. We were delighted with their professionalism and their speed of delivery was excellent.
‘Staff and customers have all been impressed with the interior. The cash desks are very stylish and the individual displays suit their individual purpose perfectly. What’s more important is the environmental impact, low energy lighting and a bright and airy layout means we are using less energy, whilst Unibox’s aluminium systems ensures maximum recyclability. This project has certainly exceeded our expectations.’
Committed to providing the highest levels of customer service, Unibox ensured a dedicated project manager was available for the duration of the project, giving Celtica complete peace of mind that the design, production and delivery would be completed on time, within budget and that expert advice and guidance would be on hand at all times.
Peter continued, ‘Even after handover, the Unibox team have been just as responsive and helpful. We have received fantastic support right through the project and it made a real difference to be able to work closely with a single point of contact. Whatever we asked for was done quickly and efficiently. All in all, it has been a job very well done, with excellent turnaround, great service and delightfully spacious, high-quality design.’
As well as providing first-rate design and production, as well as excellent levels of service, Unibox also managed other aspects of the project through ensuring the store fit was carried out to exacting standards.
Nick Wraith, managing director of Unibox, Said. ‘This was a really interesting project for us. Working with retail interior designer Greg Hill helped us to maximise the use of the products in the Unibox stable and also enabled us to demonstrate what we could do in terms of environmental efficiency, this is a growth area for us and it is something we will developing further in the coming months.
